Likelihood and Least-squares Approaches to the M-cornered Hat
A simple model of the m-cornered hat estimation problem is set up and solved by the method of maximum likelihood. The method is compared by simulation to a leastsquares method of Barnes and is shown to be inferior to it on the basis of mean square error. A bootstrap method of computing estimator performance is presented.
متن کاملThe Bayesian Sorting Hat
Size-constrained clustering (SCC) refers to the dual problem of using observations to determine latent cluster structure while at the same time assigning observations to the unknown clusters subject to an analyst defined constraint on cluster sizes. While several approaches have been proposed, SCC remains a difficult problem due to the combinatorial dependency between observations introduced by...
متن کاملImpact of the Spatial Domain Size on the Performance of the Ts-VI Triangle Method in Terrestrial Evapotranspiration Estimation
This study aims to investigate the impact of the spatial size of the study domain on the performance of the triangle method using progressively smaller domains and Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) observations in the Heihe River basin located in the arid region of northwestern China. Data from 10 clear-sky days during the growing season from April to September 2009 were use...
متن کاملThe Three-hat Problem
Many classical puzzles involve hats. The general setting for these puzzles is a game in which several players are each given a hat to wear. Associated with each hat is either a color or a number. Every player can see the color or number of everyone else’s hat but not his own. The players are then trying to figure out the colors or the numbers on their own hats. The Three-Hat Problem is one of s...
متن کاملDiurnal Method for Evapotranspiration Estimation from Soil Moisture Profile
Water use of plants can be manifested in diurnal signal of soil moisture changes, and also of water table fluctuations in shallow water table environments. The signal can be especially strong in case of groundwater dependent forest vegetation with high water demand, where the water uptake is partly happening across the capillary zone. A new technique for water uptake estimation was elaborated o...
